Through Ancient Melodies and Sacred Hymns, We Join the Heavenly Choir in Glorifying God with One Voice and One Heart
Music holds a central place in the worship of the Byzantine (Greek Catholic) Church. Unlike many Western churches where music is an added element, in our tradition, nearly the entire Divine Liturgy is sung. This reflects our belief that worship should engage not just the mind, but the whole heart and soul.
In the Slavic Greek Catholic tradition—especially among Ruthenians—our chant style is called Prostopinije (pronounced proh-stoh-PEE-nee-yeh). This ancient form of singing developed in the Carpathian Mountains and has been lovingly passed down through generations. It is sung entirely without instruments, emphasizing the human voice as the most sacred expression of prayer.
Everyone is encouraged to participate. The music is not a performance by a choir, but a shared act of worship by the whole congregation. The melodies are simple, reverent, and deeply moving, helping us to lift our hearts to God.
Through chant, we connect with the early Church, with our ancestors, and with the eternal worship of heaven. Music in our Liturgy is not just beautiful—it’s essential. It helps us pray more deeply, worship more fully, and feel more united as a community of faith.

The choirs and cantors of Annunciation parish singing the transcendent ancient music of the Byzantine Catholic Church which is heard on our radio program, “Light of the East Radio,” can now be heard on a newly released CD, THEOSIS. Cost of the CD is $20.
