Nature

Amid the wild grasses and flowing waters, we rediscover the ancient truth: that to care for the earth is to draw closer to the heart of God

The vision for Annunciation Byzantine Catholic Parish is that of a church in a natural environment – a living land that grows with the people who care for it and love it.

In Byzantine spirituality, nature is seen as a profound expression of God’s creative power, and caring for the natural world is a way to honor the Creator. From the intricate iconography in our churches to the quiet moments of prayer in the outdoors, nature has always played a pivotal role in spiritual life. The Byzantine tradition emphasizes stewardship, teaching that humans are called to care for the Earth as a gift from God. This responsibility extends beyond the physical realm; it is a spiritual duty to protect and nurture the world around us.

At Annunciation Byzantine Catholic Parish, we embrace this spiritual call by actively working to restore and care for the land we occupy. Our use of sustainable techniques such as prairie restoration, water management, and native plant cultivation allows us to serve as good stewards of God’s creation. By nurturing our prairie, we provide a sanctuary not only for wildlife but also for the community, offering spaces for prayer, reflection, and connection to the natural world.

Through these efforts, we are reminded that nature is not separate from our faith, but deeply intertwined with our spirituality. By honoring the land and its creatures, we draw closer to God’s presence in all things.

If, then, you truly heed my commandments … I will give the seasonal rain to your land, the early rain and the late rain, that you may have your grain, wine and oil to gather in; and I will bring forth the grass in your fields for your animals.

A Church in Harmony with Creation

At Annunciation Byzantine Catholic Parish in Homer Glen, our vision is simple and sacred: to live in communion with God, one another, and the natural world He created. Inspired by the ancient spirituality of the Byzantine tradition, we care deeply for the land entrusted to us—not as owners, but as stewards.

The church is surrounded by an award-winning native prairie and a carefully restored landscape that reflects the beauty of God’s creation. This living environment grows with the people who tend it. As Scripture reminds us, “The land which the Lord your God looks after… drinks in rain from the heavens” (Deuteronomy 11). We believe caring for this land is part of our worship.

Annunciation is more than a parish—it’s a model of sustainable, faith-filled living. From permeable paving and green roofs to prairie restoration and rainwater recycling, every aspect of our campus reflects respect for God’s gifts. Our landscape includes contemplation gardens, trails, and quiet places to encounter God through prayer and nature.

We invite visitors to walk the land, listen to creation, and experience the deep connection between faith and the natural world. This is not just environmental care—it is spiritual practice rooted in ancient Christian tradition.

Sustainable by Design: Honoring Creation Through Innovation

At Annunciation Byzantine Catholic Parish, caring for the environment is a sacred responsibility. Our campus is more than beautiful—it’s built to reflect our faith through sustainability, stewardship, and innovation.

From the beginning, we set out to create a parish that lives in harmony with the land. That vision is being realized through sustainable practices integrated into our design, construction, and daily operations. These aren’t just “green” features—they are expressions of our commitment to protect God’s creation.

We’ve implemented a variety of environmentally responsible technologies, including:

  • Green roofs that reduce runoff and improve insulation
  • Permeable paving that allows rainwater to soak into the ground naturally
  • Rainwater collection systems that power irrigation and water features
  • Cleansing biotopes and vegetated swales that naturally filter stormwater
  • Photovoltaic solar panels and geothermal systems that reduce energy use
  • Restored native habitats that support local ecosystems

Over time, our goal is to rely fully on renewable energy from the sun and wind, while continuing to care for our land with eco-friendly materials and methods. At Annunciation, sustainability isn’t a trend—it’s a way of life that reflects our Byzantine spirituality and reverence for the gifts God has given us.

The prairie, historically a vast, open landscape, will be reimagined across our property as part of a thoughtful, diverse ecosystem. The new prairie will feature native grasses and wildflowers, fostering extensive root systems that enhance soil health. This restoration will help capture rainfall, reduce runoff, and improve water quality. Controlled burns, part of the prairie’s ongoing management, will further ensure the health of the ecosystem.

We will replace traditional asphalt with permeable paving in our parking areas, allowing rainwater to flow naturally into the earth. This surface will reduce runoff, filter pollutants, and support groundwater recharge. During heavy rainfall, excess water will flow into vegetated swales planted with native species, further minimizing environmental impact. This thoughtful design integrates water management with aesthetics, creating an environmentally responsible parking area.

Our green roof systems will serve as both functional and ecological elements. Made from drought-tolerant plants such as sedums and grasses, these roofs absorb rainwater and help cool the environment. In addition, they reduce the amount of water that runs off our buildings, cutting down on stormwater management needs. Over time, green roofs will also improve the longevity of our buildings by protecting the roof structure from extreme temperature changes.

The gardens at Annunciation Parish will be carefully designed to reflect the beauty of the seasons, with vibrant colors, textures, and aromas that evolve throughout the year. These landscapes will be the perfect complement to our water features and terraces, creating spaces that are both beautiful and functional.

Phase I of our Landscape Master Plan focuses on restoring native habitats, particularly around the pond and areas that manage stormwater. Mowing in these areas will be minimized, creating meadows that attract birds and other wildlife. This transformation will be noticeable to all who pass by, signaling our commitment to caring for the earth. Over time, the need for conventional lawn care will diminish, reducing harmful emissions and costs.

Additional phases will expand on this vision, with plans for green roofs, permeable pavement in other areas, and even a nature park with walking trails for the community. As we progress, we will continue to monitor and adapt the ecosystems on our site, ensuring that the land thrives and evolves alongside us.

A Journey Through the Landscape

When visitors arrive at Annunciation, the difference is immediate. The asphalt ends, replaced by a colorful, textured permeable path. Children walk nearby, traveling between neighborhoods thanks to new trails that link the church with the surrounding community.

Father Tom often welcomes visitors personally. When it rains, instead of rushing indoors, he hands you an umbrella with a smile: “The rain is part of the experience.” That’s not just poetry—it’s design. Rainwater is captured by green roofs, gently spilling into water gardens alive with lilies, rushes, and native fish. Overflow is funneled artistically through chains and runnels, feeding underground cisterns that recycle the water for irrigation and fountains.

restored basins that transform urban runoff into healthy habitats. Even our grotto reflects this ethic—fed entirely by rainwater from the church roof, flowing softly over a shimmering mosaic of Christ in the Jordan.

Annunciation’s vision is bold: to become a spiritual and environmental hub for Homer Glen and beyond. Through collaboration with conservation partners, nearby forest preserves, and the wider community, we aim to extend this green sanctuary into a regional network of trails and restored lands.

The land itself has become a teacher. What was once a mowed detention basin is now a wetland learning center, visited by schoolchildren and nature lovers alike. Educational signage explains wetland ecology and the native species thriving there—proof that sustainability and spirituality can flourish together.

This is more than landscaping. It’s a living testament to our belief that creation is a gift to be revered, restored, and shared.
